An Interactive Web-Based Program

For The Design Of

Reinforced Concrete Building

This project is initiated by the Department Of Civil Engineering of the University Of Malaya as a final year project. The objective of this project is to look into the possibilities of Internet or Intranet design packages which is independent of platform restrictions. Meanwhile, it is used to design the reinforced concrete structures such as beam, column and slab according to British Standard BS 8110.

A set of programs has been written using Java programming language coupled with HyperText Markup Language (HTML). The development tool used to create these Java source codes is Symantec Visual Cafe. These programs have been uploaded on the World Wide Web and made available for Intranet environment.

Besides can easily invoke them from Web browsers like Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator to design the reinforced concrete structures, they also can be easily transmitted around the Internet and run on any computer. It is called an Appletcation, which is a merger of an applet and an application into a single entity that can behave differently depending on the environment it is executed in.

Running Appletcations With The Java Enabled Browser

Java enabled browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer allows us to run Appletcations that are called by reference in a Web page (HTML file) using the APPLET tag. The Java enabled browser finds the APPLET tags in the HTML file and runs the applets (in separate windows) as specified by the tags.

To run an Appletcations with Java enabled browser, we have to activate the browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape with the address where the Appletcation is stored. Whatever operating system we have, if we have the latest version (Version 4.0 or higher) of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, sure we can execute the Appletcation.

Click the following links to run the Appletcations on line.

As an alternative, click on the buttons below to make the Appletcation itself independent from the original context. This is necessary to be able to detach the applet from the web browser window without disconnecting it from events. It supports full ANSI graphics and uses the maximum utilization of the web browser. After detaching the applet window you can still go on browsing the web.

Otherwise, download the following WinZip files and extract them to your computer. Finally, execute the Appletcations off line using the Java enable browser.

Running Appletcations With The Java Developement Kit

Java Development Kit used to develop this project is version 1.1.5, also known as JDK 1.1.5. The JDK is a development environment for writing applets and applications that conform to the Java 1.1 Core API. Its compiler and other tools are run from a shell and have no GUI interface. The Java tools provided by JDK can be used to run the Appletcation.

The JDK installation procedure is different on different platforms, so these instructions are quite general.

  1. Go to the JDK Download page and download the software and   documentation separately:

  2. Follow the installation instructions for the particular platform at:

  3. Unpack the software and documentation bundles according to the instructions on the Web page given in step 2.

  4. Set the PATH and CLASSPATH for Windows or Solaris as described in the Readme.txt file.

  5. Use a Web browser to go to the new, local JDK documentation table of contents by opening the "index.html" file in the "docs" directory:

After installing the JDK software, download the following WinZip files and extract them to your computer.

Then execute the Appletcations off line using the Java tool by typing its name into the command prompt for the operating system with a filename as an argument. For example,
